Diesel engine perfection unfolds with the fusion of raw power and precise measurements in a vehicle meant to rule the roads of the world. Under the hood throbs Toyota's latest Common-rail diesel engine with Variable Nozzle Turbo Intercooler. Compared to previous diesel engine models, the Common-rail engine is able to supply high pressurized injections at all speed levels, controlled by a 32-bit ECU. The result is better combustion coupled with less vibration and noise in both dynamic engine displacements of 3.0L with Turbo Intercooler and the 2.5L variant.

An equally powerful and efficient gasoline engine with a displacement of 2.7 Liter, Variable Valve Timing with Intelligence (VVT-i) technology is also available. Whatever roads you take, the Hilux can take on the challenge. Here are some specifics defining its superior performance:

The part-time 4WD

The part-time 4WD varies the torque distribution automatically and instantly in response to driving conditions, contributing to excellent vehicle stability

Safety to The Perfect Sanctuary

Toyota’s philosophy toward safety is mirrored in the Hilux. . Power without compromising safety is an ideal, which Toyota adheres to. For the new Hilux, perfect power deserves a perfect refuge. Numerous advanced features and technologies in the Hilux help enhance safety from an active and passive point of view. They are designed to prevent accidents and minimize injury to the driver and passengers in any given extreme situation.

Passive Safety

In an unlikely case of an accident, many features in the Hilux help minimize damage to the cabin and maximize passenger protection.

Crash Safety Body - The Hilux incorporates front crumple zones that help absorb impact energy in a frontal collision, and a high integrity cabin structure that dissipates impact energy into the entire body.

3-point ELR Seatbelts - 3 point ELR seatbelts are fitted in the front seats and 3-point ELR-ALR seatbelts in the rear seats. 2-point seatbelts are fitted on the centre seats in some models. The seatbelts are equipped with an Emergency Locking Reactor, which locks and rewinds the seatbelts when a predetermined load is exceeded (2 –point seatbelts at center seats).

Energy-absorbing (EA) steering column - In the event of a frontal impact, Toyota’s EA Steering column absorbs secondary impact to minimize injury to the driver.

Side impact door beams - Reinforcement beams inside the door panels provide resistance and help disperse energy from side collisions. They reduce door intrusion to the cabin during a side impact

Fuel tank - The fuel tank is positioned within the frame to hope protect it from damage.

Active Safety

Toward helping the driver relax and concentrate on the road, the Hilux offers an excellent view and switches strategically positioned to minimize disturbances.

Child protector – The rear doors cannot be opened from inside the cabin while the vehicle is moving.

Brake system - High-performance front disc brakes are standard on all models. A brake booster reduces the amount of pedal pressure needed for efficient braking, while blend valves automatically adjust rear braking in relation to the amount of load. The Hilux also features Toyota’s dual brake system, which helps ensure effective braking at all times.

TVSS - The TVSS (Toyota Vehicle Security System) ensures the drive peace of mind as well as keyless entry

Anti-Flood Feature - Anti-flood features such as repositioned intake vent prevent water from entering and damaging the engine

Collapsible Steering Column - This feature ensures the safety of the drive as it collapses inward and away from the driver in times of frontal impact

G.O.A. (Global Outstanding Assessment) body - The crash safety body is comprised of a high integrity cabin with a front crumple zone. The Vigo also incorporate a compatibility body structure which focus on reducing the damage to smaller cars in a collision

Safety and GOA

The body is built to Toyota's own Global Outstanding Assessment (GOA) standards, which meet all and exceed many of the safety requirements laid down by the relevant authorities in Japan, the United States, Europe and Australia. What it means for the customer is peace of mind, knowing that safety and build quality is a given. Vigo is equipped with enough security to qualify for the UK Thatcham-1 rating, with an engine immobiliser, anti-tow sensor, hyper-frequency sensor (to detect cabin intrusion) and a back-up battery for the siren.

The Toyota Hilux has already proved its ability to cope with the toughest conditions worldwide and has become one of the world’s best selling pick-ups, with nearly 12 million sold globally since launch. This legendary durability was put to the test for the BBC’s Top Gear programme, where the Hilux survived trial by fire, flood, tumbling tower block and deadly caravan.

The Hilux Vigo is not compromised in its load-carrying ability, it has a gross vehicle weight of 2,780kg. It is a workhouse in factories and farms all around the world. Farmers in South Africa, Namibia, Angola and Pakistan are as satisfied with their Hiluxes exported by Mark Motors, as are small business owners in UK, Norway, Denmark, Spain and Latin America.

 

 

TOP Platform (Toyota Outstanding Platform)

D4-D Engine

The Hilux Vigo range is powered by either Toyota’s 16-valve 2.5-litre D-4D direct injection common rail turbo-diesel engine, delivering 102bhp & 300Nm/2,000 or the 16-valve 3.0-litre D-4D direct injection common rail turbo-diesel engine, delivering 163bhp & 343Nm/1,400-3,400.

The 3.0 litre D-4D Common Rail Turbo Diesel 1KD-FTV- already among the most powerful and torquey in the sector - is carried over from the legendary Land Cruiser and offers enormous torque with excellent fuel consumption.

The engine develops 120kW (163D|N hp) at 3,400rpm with torque of 343Nm across an engine speed range of 1,600 to 3,200rpm. Maximum speed is 106mph (170km/h) with manual transmission and acceleration from 0-62mph is under 12.7 seconds.

D-4D actually stands for direct Injection 4 Cylinder Common Rail Diesel Engine. Common rail diesels inject a fine mist of fuel into the engine at very high pressure. The result is the Ricke power and refinement as a petrol engine, but with better fuel efficiency and lower emissions. One feature of the electronic controls associated with the common rail is that there is no need to wait for glow plugs to warm up before starting the engine. You just turn the key and it fires up immediately.

Toyota D-4D engines are not just noteworthy for their smooth, linear torque, though: that's a characteristic of most modern diesel engines. What D-4Ds are noteworthy for is their unusually high power outputs, equivalent to that of many competitors' similarly-sized petrol engines. The D-4D's rev range is also usefully wider than normal, further enhancing the driving experience.

This modern technology makes use of a high-pressure pump, a common rail, and computer-controlled injectors to deliver exactly the right amount of fuel to each cylinder, at precisely the right timing. It is this exact timing and fuel measurement that leads to better combustion, cleaner burning and lower emissions of harmful substances such as soot (meeting European Step III exhaust gas regulations). And it is common rail injection that ensures D-4D engines deliver the optimum in power and torque throughout the range of rpm, for better driving performance and comfort.

Fuel in the D-4D is pressurised to an extremely high 135mpa within the "common rail" that feeds all four cylinders (older diesel engines have a separate pipe leading from the pump to each cylinder). The high pressure injection creates better fuel atomisation for complete burning and increased power output. And because there is less fuel wasted though inefficient combustion, the D-4D delivers better fuel economy too.

In addition the computer control unit injects a small amount of fuel into the cylinder just before the main fuel load ignites. This "pilot burn" lowers the explosive force of the main combustion process and goes a long way to reduce the noise and vibration formerly associated with diesel engines. This all goes to make it one of the silkiest diesels ever built.

1KD-FTV Engine

This versatile engine was introduced in 2003 in the new Prado. Its specifications are:

Torque 343 Nm @ 1,600 rpm

All 3000 cc (actually 2982) Vigos come with this excellent engine. F in FT stands for "economical" twin cam (narrow angle, around 22 degrees) and T for turbocharged.
 

2KD-FTV Engine

Most Vigo 2500 cc models come with a 2KD-FTV engine. It is a 16 valve Common Rail, Direct Injection Turbo DOHC Diesel Engine. Its specifications are:-

Compression ratio: 18.5 to 1

Horse Power: 75Kw @ 3600 rpm
Torque Output: 260 Nm @ 1600

The direct injection engine under the code name " 2KD-FTV " with 2494 cc capacity, generates a peak power of 75 kw at 3,600 rpm, a maximum torque of 260 Newton-meter at 1,600-2,400 rpm. for the 4-wheel drive version. For the 2-wheel drive version, the peak power is 75 kw at 3,800 rpm, a maximum torque of 1,400-3,200 Newton-meter at 1,400-3,200 rpm.

2KD-FTV The Most Economical One: The common rail fuel injection produces ultra high pressure which is 8 times more than the pressure of the normal fuel injection system. It can inject much finer fuel mist. This, when combined with 32 bit ECU which controls fuel quantity, valve-timing, and accurate pressure at different engine revolutions, result in the most fuel economy. It is 21% more economical than the old version. It has greater fuel economy than most of its competitors.

2KD-FTV The Most Powerful One: With the 16-valve, double overhead camshaft (DOHC) engine technology, which was formerly available in saloon or sports cars only, and with power from the turbo-charger coupled with the ingenious design, the D4D engine produces maximum torque at a much wider range of speed. This results in maximum utilization of power, whether it is during take off or while taking over, without having to drag the engine revolution to the maximum.

The Pilot Injection System smoothes the running of engine and the ride feels more like a ride in a saloon car. The noise level is only 49 decibels at the idle speed. The Pilot Injection System produces fuel injection in advance before the main injection starts working, reducing Ignition Lag Time and resulting in continuous and complete combustion. Noise from ignition is also reduced.

Difference between Vigo G & E

The major difference between "G" and "E" is that the top of the line "G" comes with airbag, ABS, spotlight, remote key, alarm & immobiliser, six-disc in dash CD autochanger and CD Player, but "E" has neither of these. E is identical to G in all other respects.

Please note that 2500 cc only has an E version. 2700cc Vigo only comes with a petrol engine. There is also a J version (see below) but there is not much demand for this vehicle.
